Aimee Way, Biologist/Avian Ecologist

Office Location:
Durango

Aimee joined Ecosphere in 2008, bringing four years of experience in avian and wildlife surveys in the Rocky Mountains and Great Plains.  Her specific survey experience includes raptors (e.g. burrowing owls, ferruginous hawks, Swainson's hawk, northern goshawk), cavity nesting birds, migratory songbirds, mountain plover and other low-density grassland bird species, and colonial water birds.  While working for Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory (RMBO), she performed point/line transects in 2002 for bird species in various habitats including Pinon Juniper woodlands, ponderosa pine forests, sagebrush shrublands, desert scrub, and plains grasslands.  These surveys require the ability to not only visually identify birds but also to identify by sound and in many methodologies to determine the distance to the bird.   She also monitored nesting mountain plovers in 2003 for RMBO and assisted with mist-netting and banding birds.  While working for Colorado State Parks, she organized raptor surveyors and conducted raptor surveys on park land.  She has written resource reports for TES and general wildlife as well as NEPA documents related to wildlife.  Her previous consulting work has required close coordination with biologists at the Forest Service, BLM, USFWS and state wildlife agencies. Aimee will attend southwest willow flycatcher training offered by USFWS in May 2008.  Prior to joining Ecosphere, Aimee was a biological consultant at Natural Resource Group in Denver, a biological technician at Colorado State Parks, and performed avian surveys for the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory for two field seasons.  Aimee received her M.S. in environmental science from the University of Colorado in Denver and her B.S. in genetics from the University of Connecticut.
